Dr. Faulkner’s work centers on investigating the semantics and pragmatics of non-standard variation in mood, tense, and aspect. For instance, she has performed several experimental investigations regarding the meanings that native Spanish speakers attach to the use of the indicative, in normatively “subjunctive-requiring” environments. Results from these experiments have shown that mood choice (whether standard or non-standard) is meaningful and non-random.
She continues to conduct research on the semanto-pragmatics of non-standardness as related to Romance, English, and Jamaican Creole.
